Livermore Valley Opera announces Un Ballo in Maschera chorus auditions:

Audition Location: Bothwell Arts Center, 2466 8th St, Livermore, CA 94550
Un Ballo In Maschera – A Masked Ball. The words alone create notions of mystery, intrigue, and romance. Verdi’s powerful opera, Un Ballo in Maschera, contains all of those and more. Originally about the assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden, Verdi had to reset the opera in in Boston, Massachusetts, and change the names of characters, due to censorship. Now, however, the original setting and characters have been returned.
In the story, the King loves the wife of his best friend, unaware that she returns his love. Her husband discovers their love and believes that he has been cuckolded. To get revenge, he joins conspirators who also want to kill the King. He kills the King at a masked ball, never realizing until too late that the King and his wife are innocent of any wrongdoing.
Musical highlights include a contralto fortune teller, outstanding mature orchestration reflecting the themes of betrayal, guilt and revenge, and the use of repeated melodies and motifs for love and revenge. The lesson learned: things are not always what they seem.
LVO will need 24 chorus singers: 12 women and 12 men. Each singer will receive a stipend of $150.
Singers are asked to audition with one aria or art song, preferably in Italian. If you do not have such a piece in your repertoire, other styles/languages may be heard at the discretion of the Chorus Master. In addition, please bring a double-sided copy of your selection, in a 3-ring binder, for the pianist.
